They feed in the coulees, they water in the draw. Im goin to Montana to throw the hoolihan. I ride an old paint, I lead an old Dan. Performed by Two of a Kind. Traditional Song Lyrics and Sound Clip. It’s an understated anthem, at once powerful and fragile. Drive Blind was one of the first songs the band wrote, and found them mixing the acid-rock guitar line of Status Quo’s Pictures of Matchstick Men with the full-on noise assault of My Bloody Valentine’s You Made Me Realise. Ride around little doggies, ride around them slow.
The lead track was a chiming, harmony-heavy pop song and the video featured Mark Gardener wearing the shoegazer standard-issue stripey top. The EP’s cover featured daffodils, and the band encouraged fans to bring the flowers to their sold-out show at London’s ULU following its release, leading to them being pelted with the yellow blooms. Ride’s second EP, Play, was released in April 1990 and would have become Creation’s first Top 40 hit, but was pipped to the post by Primal Scream’s Loaded just a few weeks earlier. They played Drive Blind on their first ever TV appearance on BBC Two’s Snub TV, in a performance recorded at London’s Subterranea club in December 1989, when they opened for Galaxie 500.ride out your storm Ride Song Series The MaryIts sheer power proves the band were anything but fey – as they were portrayed on Rob Newman and David Baddiel’s BBC Two comedy series The Mary Whitehouse Experience – with swirling feedback threatening to obscure the melody, and Loz Colbert’s incredible drumming to the fore while every other drummer in the UK seemed content to play an anaemic shuffle, Colbert was the Keith Moon of shoegaze. The ad spot shows women riding a horse and a motorcycle as the voice-over says.A highlight of the Fall EP and debut album Nowhere, both released in 1990, this is everything great about Ride in six minutes. “I wish that life could be just like Christmas Day,” they sang, “Its not like summer ’cos in summer you see hay.” 3 Dreams Burn DownXFINITY TV Commercial, A Million Thanks Song by Barry Louis Polisar. It’s still incredibly powerful, thanks once again to Colbert’s furious drumming and Steve Queralt’s driving bass, but in a little over three minutes it manages to marry the House of Love, the JesusaAnd Mary Chain and the Byrds to great effect. 4 TasteLike Chelsea Girl and Like a Daydream on their first two EPs, this track – which originally surfaced on the Fall EP, but was later added to CD editions of Nowhere – is a good example of Ride at their poppiest. “For that short period from ’90, ’91, ’92 they were my favourite band, I mean one of my favourite bands of all time.” He wasn’t the only one listening – the first minute of Coldplay’s 2002 hit In My Place bears a striking resemblance. “Ride were a fantastic band,” he raved in the recent shoegaze documentary Beautiful Noise. ![]() 7 Leave Them All BehindThe opening track from 1992’s Going Blank Again was also its lead single, but clocking in at eight minutes and 17 seconds it seemed more like a statement of intent than an attempt to get on Radio 1. Interestingly there’s a band from Norwich named after this song they are currently working on their fifth album and it was their drumkit that Colbert used for the version of Vapour Trail mentioned above. The UK referencing title and the lyrics (“Need some space to be alone/ Need a place to call my own”) could perhaps be seen a nod to missing their homeland after their first forays to the US and Japan. Across its four tracks Ride began expanding their sound and stretching themselves – never better than on this track, a loping, repetitive groove that seems to last a lot longer than its four and a half minutes. I once promoted a Mark Gardener solo show in Norwich where Loz supported and he ended up joining in on a version of this song I’ve never seen so much air-drumming in a crowd.A midpoint between Nowhere and Going Blank Again, the Today Forever EP came out in March 1991 on 12in, CD and (a sign of the times, this) video. Once again Colbert’s drum fills are right up-front and at times are almost like the lead instrument. Did someone say golden era? 8 OX4The best song about a postcode ever, the elegiac closer of Ride’s second album Going Blank Again’ is the perfect synthesis of noise, melody, melancholy and power. Incredibly, that same week the Jesus and Mary Chain’s Reverence was at 10 and Primal Scream’s Dixie-Narco EP at 11. Despite all that, on its release in February 1992, it became the first single on Creation Records to enter the top 10, going in at No 9. Until that point they had always been on an upward trajectory, but when the single stiffed at No 38 in April 1992 it was the beginning of the end of the band as a chart concern. 9 Howard HughesTwisterella was the single that was expected to build on the top 10 success of Leave Them All Behind and take Ride even closer to the top. These days OX4 is the name of his studio and production company. I once met up with Mark Gardener in Oxford’s Cowley Road – the postal district that the title refers to – and he pointed to an unassuming stationery shop before telling a long and probably libellous story about how the song came about. Ironically, OX4 was reputedly on the Gallaghers’ answerphone when they lived at home with their mum, Peggy, and in many ways it remains Ride’s final big statement. Following the album’s release in 1992, the band were second on the bill at Reading Festival and seemed set for an even bigger future, but by the time they returned two years later they were playing too much record collection rock (specifically Alan McGee’s record collection) and all too soon playing catch-up to Oasis. Apun games download“Come on baby, take my hand, and lead me to the promised land,” whispers Andy Bell in the spoken-word middle section. You can’t help but wonder what would have happened if this song had been the A-side instead. Their third album Carnival Of Light, released in June 1994, is much maligned – the band referred to it as “Carnival of Shite” – but does have some great moments (see: 1000 Miles, Magical Spring) in among the retro-rock, but overlong lead single Birdman is not one of them. 10 Let’s Get LostAnother B-side, and the only track on this list from after 1992, Let’s Get Lost was a classic slice of Ride powerpop, with additional embellishment courtesy of the Kick Horns, and named, I’ve always assumed, after the film of the same name about jazz trumpeter Chet Baker. They clearly had a surfeit of great material at this time, with tracks such as Stampede and Grasshopper appearing on B-sides and the incredible Tongue Tied being shelved altogether, until the release of the Firing Blanks rarities set in 2001.
